Charles' Story

as told by Charles

Our dear friend Charles passed away on March 1, 2006. He will be missed tremendously by all his Cacfriends and Shareacard friends. Our deepest sympathies to Jo Ann and the family.

My name is Charles I am 65 years old and I am married to a wonderful wife Jo Ann for the last 45 years. I retired from the U.S. Navy in 1975 and then had to retire from the U.S. government after 18 years due to medical reasons. I have had COPD for about 12 years now. The diabetes came on due to the medication I have to take for COPD. I have to take 20 mg of prednisone a day and I take inhaled steroids. I use a neblizer ever 4 hour for my breathing. I am on 4 liters of oxygen 24 hours a day. I had be going to the hospital every three months, but due to prayer and good care from my wife, I have not been to the hospital since April 2000. The doctor told by wife to keep doing what ever she is doing for it is working. I have been written off twice, but I showed them what prayer can do and came home. My life consists of the computer, the groups I belong to and all the friend I have met through the computer. I have really enjoyed the ShareaCard group, believe one card at a time means a lot to someone terminally ill and it make me feel good to know it can put a smile on their face. It does depress me when we lose someone. At the present time I have lost the of my bladder. This happened the day after Thanksgiving. I have had a catheter inserted three time since then. They have decided to leave it in until at the first of the year. They think the bladder has lost is ability to release the liquid due my diseases. They cannot put me to sleep for anything that is one of the problems. I have had both eye correct for cataracts. I take approx 40 pill a day and they added two more for this problem which are proscar and flowmax. I also use a CPAP at night with oxygen. I have two grown sons and five grandchildren.

Charles served during the Korean and VietNam War and is a Veteran. He joined the Navy in July 1954 and retired December 1974.

We love you Charles - and appreciate that you spend your time helping ShareaCard to send cards to others who are ill. It's your turn! Suzanne/Webmaster

2/9/02 - ShareaCard.org and the Austell Outback Steakhouse in Marietta, Georgia teamed up and surprised Charles and Joann to a special steak dinner for 2. Special thanks to the proprietor of the Austell Outback, John Azarian, for his help in setting this up and the manager Adam Boudreaux for delivering the meal. Is that a blooming onion I see Charles? YUM!

2/16/02 Well guess what? Outback surprised Charles the next weekend with a meal on them! Joann is getting used to not cooking and eating steak to boot Charles.... Thanks Outback - you are awesome!
