Lewis passed away on
10/6/03. He enjoyed all of the cards and found it
hard to believe that so many people cared about
someone they had never met.
Lewis just had heart surgery and was
just released from the hospital again. The doctors
have told his wife that nothing else can be done and
that his kidneys and liver are slowly closing down.
He has not been told about it.
Lewis was born in middle Georgia,
outside Eatonton in 1923, the youngest of 12
children. There were 7 boys and 4 girls including
one that died at birth. He has one brother who is
still alive and lives in Eatonton today. He has been
married to his wife Sallie for 61 years. They moved
to Jacksonville Florida in 1943 when he got a job
with the old Seaboard Railroad. Later it was known
as Seaboard Coastline Railroad and is now CSX. He
retired after 43 years as a sheet metal worker. They
have 2 daughters and one son. They lost one son who
drowned in 1987. They also have 5 grandchildren and
2 great grandchildren. Lewis had open heart surgery
in 1985. Several years ago his health started to go
down and he has been in and out of the hospital
since that time. This last time he was released, the
doctors said nothing else could be done as his
organs are slowly closing down. He has not been told
of his condition. He loves caps and before he got so
ill, and he loved auto racing.
Lewis likes ball caps of all kinds
and is usually wearing one. Why don't we all send
him one of our hometown baseball teams?!
